A Christian Foundation and Biblical Worldview

A faith-filled foundation is a major benefit of Christian education. Educators are able to incorporate biblical values into their curriculum, encouraging students in how to view the world using a God-focused lens. From Kindergarten, through elementary school, to the more advanced courses of middle school and high school, students can build a Christian foundation as they grow academically. This was the biggest factor in our decision to choose a Christian high school for our kids. (We home-schooled through eighth grade.) Evidence abounds that faith is usually intertwined with any academic curriculum; a secular humanistic school will encourage a materialistic worldview, and a Christian-based school will encourage a biblical worldview. The Christian school will be a partner with parents, not an adversary, in equipping students as disciples and prepared ambassadors for Christ. This was crucial to us, especially in light of what the Lord says to His people in Deuteronomy 6:4-9:

"Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God, the LORD is one! you shall love the LORD your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your strength. And these words which I command you today shall be in your heart. You shall teacher them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, when you walk by the way, when you lie down, and when you rise up. You shall bind them as a sign on your hand, and they shall be as frontlets between your eyes. You shall write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates."

The "24-7" emphasis we saw in this directive made us very much want to entrust the seven hours a day our kids would spend at school to those who shared our faith and worldview.

Educators Who Model Following Jesus

Teachers are a school's heartbeat; they are its pulse. They are also among the most influential role models in students' lives other than parents. And while you can certainly find Christian educators at a public school, the best of all academic worlds exists when teachers, school board, principal, coaches, and parents are all operating under the same spiritual and educational paradigm. We wanted our kids to learn from people who could, like Paul, say "imitate me as I imitate Christ." (1 Corinthians 11:1)

Smaller Class Size, More Individual Attention/Instruction

A Christian school can often provide more individual attention than public schools are able to give. Teachers and staff understand that every child is a unique person created in God's image with talents and gifts that they seek to develop for God's glory. With smaller class sizes, students receive one-on-one attention from their teachers, allowing teachers and administrators to know all their students personally, and to be mentors and even friends.

Safety

Public schools can only go so far in the area of discipline. The result? More frequent occurrences of ungodly-even dangerous-behavior. Simply put, Christian schools are a safer place for our children to receive an education. While not necessarily devoid of problems, severe problems are less likely to occur, and far more likely to be met with firm disciplinary action. In additional to physical well-being, Christian schools offer a much safer emotional and spiritual environment. Verbal insults and hazing, things that often go overlooked in a public school setting, as less likely to be tolerated. And the politically-correct, sin-tolerant attitudes and confused moral perspectives that too often pervade secular classrooms never see the light of day at distinctly Christian institutions. Ungodly behavior is exposed for what it is, which helps guard our children's minds against the outlooks fostered by an ungodly culture.

Peer Pressure

If only the Bible had told us that good company improves bad morals, many of us would have a welcome reprieve. Unfortunately, the opposite is true. Bad company corrupts good morals (1 Corinthians 15:33), the Apostle Paul tells us, and we can assume he was writing to a predominantly adult audience. You can imagine what he might say to a group of impressionable children and young teens. Don't misunderstand me-we knew that our kids would be exposed to bad company no matter where they went to school. We knew that sometimes they might even be the bad company. But we did find that in a Christian environment, they were much less likely to find themselves surrounded by destructive influences, and far more likely to find positive ones.
